 Monu Success Story

Monu was found begging at the Badli railway station in 2013 by the NGO staff when he was about 10-11 years old. His daily routine was to beg the whole day, eat whatever leftovers he received from the train passengers and return to his parents living in a dilapidated jhuggi at one end of the Station. After a few days of informal chatting with the boy, the NGO staff was able to coax the boy to come to Shubhakshika Open Shelter. As Monu was an easy source of money to his family, it proved a challenge to bring round his parents to accept that Manish had a right to education and many more joys of childhood. Monu was a shy boy but he was very willing to learn new things. He enjoyed participating in cultural activities. He enjoyed acting. Soon, Monu was enrolled for non-formal education at the Shelter Home. He learnt to keep himself clean, despite filth and dirt around his jhuggi. Monu was enrolled for Class VIII exam through NIOS, but he decided to discontinue and took up a job in 2021. He now works as a sales boy with a scrap dealer.

 Anuj Success Story

Anuj  was born in a family that indulged in begging for livelihood. He could dream of nothing beyond earning money by begging and eating the leftover food given as alms. The NGO contacted him in 2017 at Badli station, when he was about 9 years old and was sitting with his companion, a dog, and eating some stale stuff received from the train passengers. Anuj was a very pleasant boy who wished to go to school like other children but his family had pushed him into begging at a very early age.

It entailed aggressive effort on the part of the NGO staff to convince the family to send him to Shubhakshika Shelter Home. Anuj soon proved that he was an intelligent and receptive boy. Despite his adverse circumstances, he had big dreams. It took him no time to give up begging. His parents too agreed not to send him for begging. He was admitted to Class V in an MCD School in Sector 16, Rohini, Delhi and was provided food, clothes and regular coaching at the NGO centre. Later, his family shifted to Holumbi as the jhuggi cluster at Badli station was demolished, where he continued his studies for Class IX. This is when Anuj needed some coaching to pursue his studies. However, his family was not in a position to provide for the same. Since the NGO staff continued to be in contact with Anuj and his family, we looked after the boy as a mentor and sponsored his coaching besides providing support for stationery and clothes. He is now in Class X. Anuj’s family, which initially opposed, is happy with his progress. Shubhakshika stands by him to make his desire of earning his livelihood respectably come true.

 Akshay Success Story

Akshay, a 15 year old boy, unfortunately, lost his father and became the sole bread-winner for his family. By the time his mother found a job, he had lost interest in studies and stopped going to school. When Shubhakshika staff spotted him in Shahbad Dairy in 2013, idling away his time, "Nothing interests me!” he told them short and clear. Somehow, they convinced him to visit the shelter home.

Initially his irregularity was a topic of great concern amongst the members of the NGO but proper counseling and positive environment of the place succeeded in holding him back. He was enrolled in sixth standard. Akshay took special interest in English and participated in activities like storytelling and dance. He was awarded twice, in two consecutive years, with a certificate for dance and rangoli making by Bhumi NGO for their Nakshatra event. But, Akshay was still unwilling to attend formal school. It was difficult for the team members to convince him that school was a very happy experience. He felt unsure because he was accustomed to seeing bullies there. It was difficult to persuade him but as soon as he cleared his VIII standard with good grades from NIOS, he agreed to join a school. He was enrolled in a formal school for Class IX. Akshay looked confident and happy in his school uniform. After finishing school, he set up a small shop in Dilshad Garden, and is looking after his family. We wish him a happy future. The boy conveyed his gratitude to the staff of Shubhakshika Open Shelter Home in a letter
